Are you stuck?
What are you waiting for? Are you asking for permission? Why?
Seth Godin the genius behing the successful blog, http://sethgodin.typepad.com/, has written a book on initiation. I purchased the book, Poke the Box, because I wanted to read something new from an author that I enjoyed online.
Reading the first sentence hooked me. Seth Godin states, ” Imagine that the world had no middlemen, no publishers, no bosses, no HR folks, no one telling you want you couldn’t do. If you lived in that world, what would you do? Go. Do that. ” Poke the Box presents one main idea, and that idea is to “Go!” “start now”. What is holding you back? What are you waiting for? Youth Ministry needs a new voice and that is you! Maybe you need this book to allow yourself to start something new.
I find myself making up the craziest excuses why this website won’t work. When I first created Youth Ministry Media, it was just an idea. I could have made up so many excuses why it won’t work (and I did). At first I didn’t have a plan. I just started. That is probably why I ended up after a few months with no visitors. Before I had a plan, I had to start. To purchase the domain, to find the right wordpress theme, and figure out what I was going to say. It was freaky at first to put myself out there. I agree with Seth Godin when he states, ” The job isn’t to catch up to the status quo; the job is to invent the status quo.” Now, he writes that in regards to business, but I think this has the same implications to Youth Ministry. Are we ok with the way things are? Are you?
Seth Godin in his book, Poke the Box, pushes the reader to start something new even at the risk of failure. At the risk of your job. Are you frusterated with the status quo of your youth ministry? Of your church?
I talk to people all the time who want to start things, but never do. We are too afraid to fail, or that we might not accomplish what we want. We are gripped by fear. I want you to think when was the las time you started something new?
I really appreciated Seth Godin’s book, Poke the Box. I was really impressed with how you can download a free workbook for this book. What a clever way to selling books! I want to thank Seth Godin for pushing me to Poke the Box in Youth Ministry. To push the boundaries, and to help youth pastors communicate to teenagers.
Here are some great quotes from the book,
The more you do, the more you fail.
We’ve been taught to shut up and keep our heads down.
Organizations have people who will try to patch problems over after the fact, instead of motivated people eager to delight on the spot.
