How do you prepare your messages? How do you plan our your speaking calendar? Do you have a preaching template?
I hope that you have a system. If you don’t have a system, here is insight into what I do.
Each year, I spend some time in the summer breaking down what I want to preach on this coming year in the youth ministry. It is heavy lifting and takes tons of time. I want to look over the calendar which you could get the 2014/2015 planning calendar and try to see where God is leading the youth ministry this coming year.
After all that, I write down series ideas and passages of scripture. Little by little the calendar falls into place after tons of prayer and prep.
Here is how I break down the two preaching templates.
Big Picture:
What is the title of the series? What is the over arching main idea? How will I use social media? How long will it be?
This means looking at the whole year. It means breaking down the main idea of a whole text of scripture.
Small Picture:
What is the title of the sermon? What is the big question of the text? What is the big idea?
This means looking at each individual week. In the summer it is nice to get the main question and big idea of a text so when I am preparing the message in the fall, I know where I am going with it.
All this is based on the model from Haddon Robinson’s book, Biblical Preaching: The Development and Delivery of Expository Messages. If you haven’t read it, it is a must read, and it will help you become a better preacher.
