How do you educate students and parents about porn?
We just taught a course for parents called, “Sex, kids, and the gospel”, and it was surprising at what parents don’t know, or are not willing to admit their kids have seen “yet”. The one way to communicate to students how devastating porn could be to both them and the people on the screen is through a social action. Students today are passionate about different social causes. I love the slogan on this infographic from fight the new drug, “clicking it is supporting it”. Supporting what? That is what some of your students might say. Supporting sex slavery, abuse, expolitation and so much more.
We need to educate parents and students that by clicking on images or videos of pornograpic nature, you are supporting abuse and slavery unseen on your computer screen.
One stat from this infographic that makes me grieve for this generation, and my kids, is that 11 years old is the first exposure to hard core porn. This isn’t like stumbling across a playboy for the first time, it’s being exposed to porn that more graphic and disturbing that you can imagine.
It’s messed up. If you don’t believe me, you can listen to this great news piece from CBC Canada called generation porn. We need to fight this new drug. We need to fight for our selves, for our churches, for our kids, and our communities.
How do we fight? It’s by bringing awareness. I am getting my sex, kids and the gospel class ready to hit the store by the end of the week. You could download it and use it this month in your youth ministry to teach parents.
Awareness is also about sharing stories. Read what the women have said on this infographic. Share this with your ministry during a series on sex. They need to know that by clicking it, you are actually supporting it.
Porn isn’t going away anytime soon. Actually, it’s only going to become more common place in a world where we allow our kids access to digital devices 24/7. Youth pastors need to help parents understand and fight this battle.
