Should You Take a Digital Sabbath?

by admin June 15, 2011   Blog

Recently, I was at a retreat with a bunch of preteens and I wasn’t able to get cell reception.  I didn’t use my phone for 3 days straight.  During this away trip I thought to myself how great it was to turn off my phone for a couple of days.  When I got back from my retreat I left my cell off for my day off.  I usually don’t do this.  My wife commented, “it was really nice to have you without your phone on all day.”  I began to think about how much I actually use my phone.  And I realized that I use it a lot.  I have lately been reading about Sabbath.  You can read, Mark Buchanan’s book,  The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath.  It made me think, should I at least try to take a Sabbath from my cellphone, facebook, twitter, anything digital?

I am going to try to turn my phone off on my day’s off.  4 times a year when I am on my Spiritual Retreat I want to completely turn off all digital devices.  In April, I went to Hawaii with my wife and son for three weeks, it was the more relaxing time.  I completely turned everything off.  It was a real time of rest and refreshment.

What do you think about taking a digital sabbath?

I’m a grandfather born in 1940 and went many years before we even had a Frieden MECHANICAL calculator, let alone anything handheld or digital. I’m wondering if going a digital sabbath is just the end, or just the beginning. It seems to me, that it’s more a question of HOW we use tech, not just if.

I think it is a great idea to take a digital sabbath. To just turn off all phones, computers, and electrical devices. And just spend time with the Lord, getting fed by the Word.

  • I took a social media fast for 40 days a few years ago. It helped me redirect my thoughts and focus on others rather than myself. I also try to take mini-Sabbath’s when it comes to digital devices. Sometimes I’ll take an entire day off from computers and my smartphone (except to answer a phone call). It’s good for the soul.
