Are you using an autoresponder?

What is an autoresponder?  On wikipedia the source for all information it says, “An autoresponder is a computer program that automatically answers e-mail sent to it. They can be very simple or quite complex.”   I would add to that definition that an autoresponder is a computer program that will automate a response.  I use twitter a lot, and I cannot believe how many people automate their twitter.  I cannot believe how many youth workers automate their twitter.

Here is why you shouldn’t use autoresponders.

1.  They take the personal touch out of it.  I downloaded an ebook from a well known blogger and the guy actually sent me a personal email to thank me.  I was blown away.  The thing that sets you apart from any company or organization is that you are able to connect with people in a personal way.  This is why you are using twitter, facebook, or email programs.

2. It makes you seem phony.  Are you a celebrity?  Are hundreds of thousands following you?  Is your twitter account unmanageable?  If you said no to all of the above, you should get rid of your automated twitter tools.  Be you!  If you want to reply to everyone that follows you actually reply to that person.  That is how you will set up your brand.

3.  You are better than that!  Every time I see an autoresponded message on twitter I cringe.  Does it work?  Is it worth spamming all your new followers?  This is one question you need to ask yourself, and the people that follow you.

Do you use autoresponders?  Why?  I would love to hear your response.
